The risk of developing leukemia in elderly patients
The risk of developing leukemia in elderly patients
Chemotherapy affects the cancer cells, as well as some healthy cells. This leads to the known side effects such as hair loss, diarrhea, nausea and anemia. In very rare cases, such an effect on the cells of the hematopoietic system gives rise to other malignant diseases.
This topic is devoted to an extensive study, whose results showed that women who received chemotherapy within 10 years increased the risk of a particular type of leukemia - acute myeloid leukemia compared with those patients who did not receive chemotherapy.
Yet it is worth noting that although the risk of this form of leukemia and was higher in these patients, it still remains very low. In patients receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer within 10 years the risk of developing acute myeloid leukemia was 1.8%, while in patients not receiving chemotherapy, the risk was 1.2%.
The results of this study is based on an analysis of data on female patients with breast cancer from 1992 to 2002.
