Vertebrology Conservative and surgical treatment of spine

Vertebrology - a separate section of orthopedics, which deals with diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the spine.

Modern vertebrology allows the patient to get rid of the disease, which previously was considered a "lot" of the doctor-neurologist. The patient could only count on a strong new drugs, new treatments and physiotherapy pain management.

However, medicine, and in particular, surgery and orthopedics, is not standing still. The development of science has led to the emergence of new minimally invasive therapies, safer anesthetic.

A huge step forward in addition, allowed to make in the treatment and diagnosis of diseases of the spine. If before the doctor had just plain radiography and in some cases - the contrasting methods of X-ray, now armed with the most advanced available vertebrology diagnostic methods such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound.

If plain radiography provides only an image of bone tissues of the spine, and all the "mixed", the new methods make it possible to obtain an image of all tissues (such as bone and cartilage, as well as soft tissue), and in addition, layer by layer, which allows the physician to accurately determine the cause of pain and dysfunction of a nerve.

In addition, new methods of diagnosis are associated with less radiation exposure to the patient, and ultrasonography of her at all. Note that spinal ultrasound was used only recently.

Among the diseases that are within the competence of the doctor-vertebologa, we note such as a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, low back pain, spondylolisthesis, cauda equina syndrome, ankylosing spondylitis, scoliosis and some others.

Probably the most common pathology encountered by the doctor-vertebrologist - a herniated disc. However, no less serious and less common illness is, and osteochondrosis. And if earlier, this pathology was the prerogative of the neurologist, but now the disease is increasingly drawn to the orthopedic patient, but rather to vertebrology. This is due to the fact that the neurologist only "removes" the manifestation of this disease, while surgery can eliminate the cause of pain.

Treatment of diseases of the spine is held as a conservative methods, and operational.

Among the drugs, which are used in the treatment of diseases of the spine, are such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antidepressants and muscle relaxants.

All surgical procedures for diseases of the spine performed under general anesthesia. All surgical treatments for diseases of the spine can be divided into traditional and minimally invasive. And, if possible, preference is given to them just because they are technically more difficult, though, but it is much easier to carry the sick.

Among minimally invasive interventions in the treatment of, for example, a herniated disc, we note, as follows:
  • Radiofrequency thermal annuloplasty
  • Puncture laser diskectomy
  • Percutaneous automated discectomy
  • An endoscopic discectomy
  • Microdiscectomy

These methods allow you to remove a herniated disc. The principle of operation, such as radiofrequency annuloplasty, is to "welding" of tissue outer ring of the intervertebral disc, resulting eliminated the gap, through which she can get a hernia.

Percutaneous discectomy - another minimally invasive method of treatment, in which all the interventions carried out through a small incision in the skin. At endoscopic intervention the whole operation is also carried out through a small incision using the endoscopic technique.

Standard surgery for a herniated disc was followed by discectomy spondylosyndesis - fixing two vertebrae. However, there is a less traumatic surgery - Microdiscectomy. This technique allows the operation to remove intervertebral disc through a small incision, thereby causing injury to surrounding tissues.

In addition to the vertebrae and intervertebral discs, surgical interventions for diseases affecting the spine and soft tissue in the ligaments, capsule of the joints and muscles. These interventions are carried out in the curvature of the spine.

One of the modern methods of treatment of vertebral fractures is vertebroplasty. The method consists in the fact that the fracture site is filled with just the special medical adhesive, which strengthens the Shattered vertebra. The entire procedure is performed under local anesthesia and under ultrasound guidance. You do not need any cuts.

In addition to surgical and medical methods of treatment, vertebrology deals and physiotherapy treatment. But the effect of this treatment is only in the elimination of pain, so that recovery from laser irradiation, or magnets, of course, will not.

Finally, another method of treatment, which also has the right to mention it - it's stretching. This non-invasive method of treatment which aims to expand the space around the nerve roots. Unfortunately, it also does not lead to a cure, because eventually everything returns to normal, but it eliminates the need for surgery, where her conduct for some reason impossible.
