Internal radiation therapy for breast cancer

Internal radiation therapy for breast cancer

Internal radiation therapy, or bahiterapiya - a form of radiotherapy where the radiation source of radiation placed directly into the tissues affected by cancer. In this type of radiation and ionizing radiation are radioactive items in the form of grains, ribbons, or capsules. These items are installed directly into the tumor tissue or in the surrounding tissue. Installing them is carried out using a thin tube - a catheter.

This technique is called MammoSite. Sometimes, in order to establish the radioactive seeds used catheter size - applicators. Usually, before the mammary gland catheter for staging of a radioactive substance, the area anesthetized.

Internal radiation therapy may be performed in three ways:

Radiation in small doses. In this case, a radioactive substance remains in the tissues of the breast for 1 - 7 days. The course of the treatment the patient is in hospital. After the treatment the doctor removes the catheter or applicator with a radioactive substance.

Radiation in high doses. With this type of brachytherapy, a radioactive substance remains in the breast tissue of 10 - 20 minutes. The course of this treatment can take place within 2 - 5 days twice a day or once a week for 2 - 5 weeks. The patient may be the entire course of treatment in the hospital, or each time coming for treatment.

Constant radiation. Once the radioactive substance is injected into the breast tissue, the catheter is removed. Thus, a radioactive seed remains in the tissue, and radiation is waning. In this case the first time will need to limit contact with others so as not to expose them to radiation. It should be noted that this method of radiation therapy physiological isolation (urine, sweat, saliva) will not emit radiation.
